Período dos Três Reinos da Coreia

O fenômeno Jungkook: O sucesso do BTS e a criação de um superstar mundial

The Three Kingdoms period is the earliest historical point named in the book’s account of Korean military conscription. Its importance lies less in a detailed reconstruction of ancient history than in the continuity it establishes: military recruitment is described as a response to repeated foreign invasions, a precedent that helps explain why compulsory service remains embedded in South Korean civic life and in the public meaning of Jungkook’s enlistment.

Historical Origin

The book states that military recruitment in Korea has existed since the Three Kingdoms period because the Korean peninsula faced frequent foreign invasions. This places military obligation within a long historical narrative rather than treating it as a recent administrative policy. The reference functions as background for the later claim that military service is not merely a bureaucratic interruption but a deeply rooted institution shaped by persistent security concerns.

From Historical Practice to State Obligation

The modern system acquired a formal legal basis in South Korea in 1949, only a few years after the end of the Japanese colonial period in 1945. The following year, the outbreak of the Korean War made the system indispensable. Although the conflict later entered an armistice rather than ending in a peace treaty, the book presents the security situation as an enduring presence. Seoul lies only 55 kilometers from the Demilitarized Zone, so the historical memory associated with military defense remains connected to everyday awareness of danger.

Civic Duty and Masculine Passage

Within this historical framework, compulsory military service is described as an unfortunate necessity and a rite of passage for South Korean men. Publicly, men are expected to accept the duty with patriotism and even pride; privately, the prospect can carry anxiety and grief, especially because service removes roughly eighteen months from a person’s youth. The shaved head required by military service becomes a visible symbol of the transition from civilian and idol life into military identity, making the institution a force that regulates not only labor but also appearance, age, and the timing of adulthood.

Relevance to Jungkook’s Story

The Three Kingdoms period therefore provides the distant historical foundation for the modern circumstances surrounding Jungkook. His enlistment in December 2023, alongside Jimin, took place within a system whose legitimacy is traced back to ancient defense and whose contemporary rules require eligible South Korean men to serve. The historical reference also sharpens the contrast between Jungkook’s global career and his national obligation: despite BTS’s international cultural role, his military service remained part of the collective duty expected of South Korean men.‌
